WoW Forever Controller Support & Steam Deck Guide
Set up WoW Forever controller and Gamepad UI support, understand Steam Deck Beta testing, and check current controller limitations.
Quick answer
October 15 adds gamepad-supported Auto Attack/Auto Shot switching and fixes selected quest reward, object turn-in and Edit Mode cases. This is controller UI support, not official Steam Deck certification or a guarantee against every input problem.
OfficialView evidence
Try this first
- Enable the Alpha Gamepad UI in the current Beta settings.OfficialView evidence
- If controller glyphs appear but input does not work, fully exit and restart the game before retesting.Community ReportedView evidence
- On Steam Deck, verify the Steam Input layout and your Battle.net launch workflow one change at a time.Community ReportedView evidence
If that does not work
- If input still is not recognized, treat the configuration as unresolved rather than assuming the restart is a universal fix.Community ReportedView evidence
- Use the FPS guide for performance variation instead of changing controller settings to solve it.
What not to do
- Do not describe Steam Deck as Blizzard officially supported.
- Do not assume a forum-reported UI or tooltip workaround fixes every controller issue.
What is still unknown
- Blizzard has not confirmed a universal Steam Deck setup, controller-detection fix or full remapping plan.
October 15 update: current scope and practical distinction
October 15 adds gamepad-supported Auto Attack/Auto Shot switching and fixes selected quest reward, object turn-in and Edit Mode cases. This is controller UI support, not official Steam Deck certification or a guarantee against every input problem.
Official Gamepad Support
Blizzard’s What’s Next panel recap lists official gamepad support for Forever. That confirms the controller feature, not official support for every handheld, operating system or controller configuration.
Build 69977 gamepad improvements
Blizzard officially says controller navigation should work more properly at character select when the client launches with gamepad active, and quest-starting items can now be used on gamepad. These scoped changes do not establish official Steam Deck support.
Does WoW Forever work on Steam Deck?
Multiple Beta players report launching Forever on Steam Deck, using the Gamepad UI and playing with built-in controls, Steam Input or an external controller. Results vary by setup, so this is Beta-verified community testing rather than official Steam Deck support.
How to enable controller / gamepad mode
Current Beta reports identify a Gamepad UI option that is still labelled Alpha. Enable it in the game settings, then check that controller glyphs and bindings appear. The exact setup may differ between desktop, Steam Input and handheld environments.
Steam Deck setup
Players report using Battle.net through a Steam or non-Steam workflow, Steam Input and a Proton-compatible environment. Treat those installation details as community-reported setup paths, not an official Blizzard Steam Deck guide.
Controller enabled but input not working
Several Steam Deck reports say controller input was not recognized immediately after enabling Gamepad UI. A full game restart helped some players, while other reports still could not get input working; it is a Beta workaround, not a fix.
Current controller / gamepad known issues
Beta forum feedback reports Gamepad UI Edit Mode profiles that cannot be selected or saved, limited remapping for some buttons and modifiers, missing bag or quest-reward tooltips, and UI elements that can overlap action bars or chat. A Legion Go trigger report is a device-specific community report, not a handheld-wide conclusion.
Performance
Steam Deck players also report variable performance and player-density drops. For complete low-FPS troubleshooting, use the dedicated FPS guide rather than treating performance as a controller issue.
September 24 official Gamepad Support update
Blizzard added class-specific action-bar flyouts for Druid shapeshifting, Hunter and Warlock pets, Paladin auras and Warrior stances. The pet bar no longer replaces the bottom gamepad bar. The update also added a Compact Action Bar, Fixed Party Targeting, left/right target-modifier options, updated Map and Quest Log bindings, POI hover and Compact Raid Frame Manager / Role Poll support, and fixed an Edit Mode layout issue. These are official gamepad changes, not a Steam Deck platform certification.
October 1: static bindings and layout resets
Blizzard updates pet stables and compact party/raid managers for gamepad and fixes moving macros on a gamepad bar. Gamepad UI bindings are now static; rebinding only changes the keyboard/mouse interface. Separately, switching Gamepad UI mode resets the active Edit Mode layout to its default preset. Avoid assuming a custom layout will survive a mode switch. None of this establishes official Steam Deck platform support.
Steam Input: separate detection from remapping
Editorial comparison: record the Steam shortcut and current layout, then check whether a basic controller input reaches the client before adding keyboard mappings or paddles. Change one mapping at a time and keep a keyboard/mouse recovery path. Players use Steam Input to map extra buttons to existing keys, but October 1's official static Gamepad UI bindings mean keyboard/mouse rebinding does not redefine that UI. Do not interpret this limitation as proof the controller is undetected.
Steam Deck controller not working: a reversible checklist
Keep your known-working launch workflow, fully exit/relaunch after enabling Gamepad UI and retest basic movement before changing compatibility layers. Restart helped some players, not everyone. For cursor jitter or a mapping that works only in menus, record whether you use native Gamepad UI, a mouse-trackpad layout or remote streaming. A September report describes trackpad jitter recovering only after a Battle.net restart; October 5 feedback still limits native back-button mapping. These are setup-specific observations, not official Deck certification or a guaranteed Proton/Steam Input fix.
October 8 gamepad input and Edit Mode changes
Blizzard fixes input after looting and adds Gamepad Action Bar Edit Mode support. Layouts save separately by UI type; compact-bar options move to Edit Mode and old option choices are not migrated. These are gamepad changes, not official Steam Deck platform certification.
