WoW Forever Ray Tracing: Unavailable Option & Graphics Errors
Why WoW Forever Ray Traced Shadows may be unavailable, plus RX 9070 XT black-screen and RTX reports, safe graphics checks and evidence limits.
Quick answer
Blizzard removed Ray Traced Shadows in the October 1 Beta update and says it will return after its functionality is fixed. An unavailable option therefore is not proof your GPU lacks ray tracing. Historical RX 9070 XT and RTX reports describe separate failures; no universal driver cause or return date is confirmed. Don't force hidden settings or repeat black-screen stress tests.

Try this first
- Check current official notes and identify whether the option is absent or the client actually crashes.
- Keep unsupported features unforced and record client/GPU/driver before a reversible comparison.
- Stop repeated black-screen tests; report the exact symptom and use the matching existing graphics guide.
What not to do
- Do not force hidden RayTracing settings or change the registry.
- Do not blindly downgrade drivers, disable security software or import Retail-only fixes.
What is still unknown
- The option's return date and a universal GPU/driver cause remain unconfirmed.
Option unavailable: first check the Beta change
The current official baseline removes this specific option pending a fix. Hardware support and driver updates do not override a feature deliberately unavailable in the client. A future return has no confirmed date here. Check new notes before assuming an unsupported label means defective hardware.
RX 9070 XT: separate Retail and Forever symptoms
The September thread describes Retail failing after enabling Ray Traced Shadows and the same user's Forever client also showing black screens, driver resets and texture/loading issues. That is a report on specified systems, not proof all RX 9070 XT cards fail or that Retail and Forever share an identical cause. Later activity alone is not a confirmed repair.
RTX users cannot enable it: historical reports
A September 19 RTX 4090 Beta report describes an unsupported graphics label despite working Retail DXR on the same system. It predates October 1's explicit removal. Do not turn that report into a current all-RTX compatibility rule or recommend its forced configuration edits.
Low-risk order: identify the failure before changing settings
Compare the exact client/version and distinguish a missing menu from a crash. Keep Ray Traced Shadows off/unforced where unavailable. Use supported vendor drivers and built-in verify/repair only as generic checks; no blind downgrade or registry edit is recommended. Stop testing if the display blacks out or the driver repeatedly resets.
FPS, Secondary Lighting and Mac are related, not identical
Use FPS help for sustained low frame rate or movement stutter, Secondary Lighting for a reproducible zoning/raid-setting mismatch, and Mac help for Mac-specific crash/display symptoms. The removed shadows option is not proof all new lighting uses the same ray-tracing code or every performance problem is fixed.
What to report and what remains unknown
Capture client/version, GPU, supported driver, OS, exact error, elapsed session time and whether the menu is missing or the process/display fails. Submit a precise Beta bug report. A shared failure message does not establish a memory leak, driver defect or confirmed universal fix.
