WoW Forever Penance Changes: Healing, Damage and Mana
Understand WoW Forever's October 8 Penance changes, Rank 1 mana increase and channel correction, with higher-rank healing and player reports separated.
Quick answer
October 15 fixes Inner Focus affecting a queued spell after Penance and extends named talent interactions to Penance. It does not announce reversal of the October 8 rank-specific Mana/healing changes. Check rank, channel completion and the updated talent text separately.

Try this first
- Record level, build and the Penance rank actually available in your spellbook.
- Compare healing and damage separately with unchanged gear and buffs.
- Include overhealing, interrupted channels and Mana recovery in your notes.
What not to do
- Do not treat a later-rank patch entry as proof of current Beta access or buy a respec based on an unsupported tier list.
October 15 update: current scope and practical distinction
October 15 fixes Inner Focus affecting a queued spell after Penance and extends named talent interactions to Penance. It does not announce reversal of the October 8 rank-specific Mana/healing changes. Check rank, channel completion and the updated talent text separately.
Two seconds versus three: what was wrong?
Blizzard describes incorrect treatment of the existing channel, not a new three-second cast time. The note does not publish a full coefficient table. Do not derive an exact percentage loss for every character by dividing two by three: rank, gear and effective healing still need measurement. See the official evidence below.
Rank 1 mana cost and higher-rank healing
The stated efficiency goal is a comparison with Heal / Greater Heal, not a promise that every healing situation favors Penance. Higher-rank tuning is not proof those ranks are usable by your current Beta character. Check the trainer and spellbook rather than importing a level-60 tooltip into a low-level test.
Current Beta access: test the rank you own
The reviewed Beta remains capped at 30. A patch can change later ranks before testers can use them. We have not independently verified trainer requirements for every Penance rank; rank 2/4 availability must not be inferred from the patch heading. Record your level, talent allocation, spell rank and client build before comparing results.
Player reports: damage complaints are not healing measurements
October 9 forum replies criticize solo damage and wand-heavy leveling, while other replies say healing remains usable. These are Community Reported experiences with different setups, not a controlled ranking. PvP discussion also disputes the reason for the change; tournament speculation is not an official balancing explanation.
Is Penance still worth using? Compare the job first
For healing, compare effective healing after overheal, Mana spent and whether the channel completes safely. For solo damage, compare kill time plus drinking time against your available alternatives. For PvP, interruption risk and the immediate need to survive matter separately. These are editorial testing criteria, not a verified optimal rotation or a claim that one spell always wins.
A conservative test before changing talents
Keep gear, buffs and spell rank constant. Try a few comparable ordinary encounters, recording each channel and the resource cost. Change one action at a time; do not spend heavily on a respec based on an isolated screenshot. If the tooltip and combat log disagree, report both with the build and reproduction rather than guessing a universal coefficient.
What this guide cannot establish
No independent current-build throughput dataset was obtained. Final level-60 strength, best talents and a guaranteed PvP/PvE ranking remain unknown. Use the Priest leveling guide for Mana and wand decisions and the update archive to check whether later tuning supersedes this dated change.
