Deadlock First Matches: A Practical Beginner Checklist
Prepare your first Deadlock matches with Standard mode, manageable hero practice, current controls and useful feedback instead of outdated ranked rules.
Quick answer
Start in Standard rather than racing Ranked eligibility. Use the current build's learning controls, pick manageable heroes and practice one skill at a time before queuing. The September 29 map/HUD changes make old fixed routes unreliable. This is a conservative learning checklist, not an independently tested optimal build or a guaranteed way to win.

Violet is released; Nurse Harrow is still a dated plan
Valve's October 16 Paint the Town announcement says Violet is available in-game, with Living Ink, Flow State, Still Life and Abstract Landscape. The same notice schedules Nurse Harrow for October 20 at 14:00 PDT. Solomon remains an earlier release, not the newest hero. Start by reading the current ability descriptions and testing movement separately from damage; this introduction does not establish a best build, win rate or guaranteed synergy.

Current-build check: new heroes and the October 14/15 balance update
Deadman Danny is available in the October 13 official introduction. Valve's next minor patch is titled October 14 but was published October 15 UTC: Danny gains health and several ability improvements while Baba receives reductions. Do not treat a launch-day build video or a player's win-rate anecdote as a current universal ranking. In an early match, read the current ability descriptions and compare the actual patch before copying an older setup.
A first-session plan you can actually follow
First inspect current controls and available learning/practice options. Learn firing, reload, movement and abilities without assuming a keybind from an old video. Then use Standard with a small hero pool; keep the first match's goal narrow enough to recognize whether you improved.
Official status: Editorial learning plan grounded in current mode and update scope
- Inspect your current input bindings and accessibility settings; adjust only what improves readability or comfortable control.
- Use available practice/tutorial options to rehearse movement, reload and one hero's abilities before a live queue.
- In Standard choose a familiar hero and agree a simple team plan. Practice surviving and communicating rather than chasing every fight.
- After the match review one repeated mistake and keep the build/date with your notes before changing one habit.

Do not confuse learning with Ranked unlocks
Your Standard hero experience matters for later matchmaking and eligibility, but win counters are not a universal measure of mastery. Switch to the Ranked guide only when the account and roster requirements are met. A friend in Ranked cannot make an unqualified account eligible.
If a queue remains unavailable after you can play, separate the learning plan from the Deadlock matchmaking and Ranked eligibility checks; an invitation does not establish every queue entitlement.

Use fresh examples, not a promised meta
Valve says core systems remain in development, and recent map/HUD changes matter to routes and visuals. No complete current optimal item build, neutral timing route or win-rate ranking has been independently verified here. When reporting a bug, include the build and a reproducible symptom; do not call ordinary learning difficulty an official defect.
