WORLD OF WARCRAFT · VERSION CHOICE

Which World of Warcraft Version Should You Play in 2026?

Choose between Retail, Forever, Classic Era, Anniversary and Hardcore with clear access rules, separate progression and practical starting advice.

Last checked October 2, 2026

Quick answer

Choose the version your friends actually play, then match its rules to the experience you want. Retail is modern WoW; Classic offers several distinct historical or modified modes; Forever is a new, reimagined Azeroth experience—not a replacement for either. Forever is currently in Beta and scheduled to launch November 4, 2026. You can use the same subscription for multiple eligible versions, but do not expect one character or its progress to follow you everywhere.

Version facts are official; suitability recommendations are Pixlena editorial advice, not a population or quality ranking.

Compare the experience, not a tier list

Retail / Modern WoW

The ongoing expansion-based game; Midnight is the current expansion.

Consider it if: Consider it for the modern game and its current expansion. Check which version your friends use before choosing a realm.

WoW Forever

A permanent third experience with reimagined original Azeroth and a level-60 cap. Currently in Beta; launch is scheduled for November 4.

Consider it if: Consider it for rediscovering Azeroth rather than faithfully replaying an older patch. Beta findings can still change.

Classic Era

The original-era Classic experience, separate from expansion-progression branches.

Consider it if: Consider it if preserving the original-era setting matters more to you than following expansion releases.

Classic Anniversary

The Anniversary branch is now Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, with Outland content.

Consider it if: Choose this deliberately if you want that era; Anniversary is not another name for Classic Era.

Classic Hardcore

A one-life ruleset: a dead character cannot resurrect on its Hardcore realm.

Consider it if: Consider it if the risk itself is appealing. It is not our default recommendation for learning without consequences.

Mists of Pandaria Classic

The currently active expansion-progression Classic branch.

Consider it if: Consider it if Pandaria is the era you want to revisit, or your existing group is there.

Season of Discovery

An active Classic variant with class-altering discoveries and modified content.

Consider it if: Consider it for a changed Classic ruleset rather than a strictly original-era replay.

New player: choose a group and a ruleset, not a popularity claim

Our recommendation is editorial, not a Blizzard ranking. Ask friends for the exact client, region and realm—not just ‘WoW Classic.’ If you are starting alone, decide whether you want the modern expansion game, an older era, a modified Classic experience or Forever’s reimagined world. There is no verified universal ‘best’ version for every new player.

Returning player: find your character before committing

Check the correct game version and realm in Battle.net before assuming an old character is missing. A familiar class name does not guarantee the same mechanics or progression. Choose based on the version you want to play now, not only the one you remember.

Characters, realms and progress are not one shared save

Blizzard’s Classic FAQ says Classic progress does not simply carry into other Classic versions. Modern, Classic branches and Forever are distinct experiences; do not assume gear, quests or characters transfer between them. Specific character services may have exceptions and restrictions. Confirm the exact source and destination with Blizzard before buying a service or planning around a transfer.

Can you play multiple versions with one subscription?

A WoW subscription or game time provides access to the active Classic modes and Modern WoW’s included content; the latest Modern expansion is a separate purchase. Blizzard says Forever will be included with a subscription at launch. Current Forever Beta entry has separate eligibility—launch access is not a guarantee of immediate Beta access. Owning access to several clients does not merge their character progression.

What to do next

Pick one starting version, confirm access in Battle.net and agree on the region and realm with your group. You can explore another eligible version later without treating the first choice as permanent.
