Gears of War: E-Day Split-Screen & Co-op
Check E-Day's two-player console split-screen, online campaign squads and PC limits, plus the scoped suspend/resume sign-out fix and Horde Siege relationship.
Quick answer
E-Day officially offers two-player local split-screen on console, not PC. Online play supports squads of up to four across campaign and multiplayer; Horde Siege combines squads into its larger battlefield. The October 5 patch addresses a split-screen sign-out after suspend/resume, not every co-op crash. Do not import another Gears game's platform rules or treat a PC mod as native support.
Current status: October 14 patch and remaining reports
October 14 fixes several co-op tracking and split-screen input/progression cases, including adding player two in the menu and losing input after a Supply Cache. This does not add a new platform or change the published local/online player limits. Update both installations and report the precise chapter and local/online mode if a symptom recurs.
Campaign: local versus online
Xbox's release terms distinguish two-player console split-screen from up-to-four-player online co-op. On PC, use the announced online mode rather than assuming a local second-player menu exists. These numbers describe a local screen or squad, not twelve people sharing one campaign screen.

Xbox and PC differences
The official terms state console-only split-screen. Steam/Xbox-on-PC availability and Xbox Play Anywhere do not themselves add native PC couch co-op. An unofficial split-screen modification is community software, not a supported release feature; this guide does not recommend bypasses or patched executables.

Which modes and player counts?
The launch description covers campaign, Horde Siege and Versus online squads. Horde Siege's twelve-player battlefield has three four-player squads; it is not a twelve-player local mode. The announcement's broad console split-screen statement does not provide an exhaustive per-playlist local compatibility matrix, so check the actual mode's lobby instead of promising every playlist supports it.
Fixed scoped issue: suspend/resume sign-out
The October 5 released patch addresses Bilefrog-Kalona: a split-screen player could be signed out after suspending and resuming. This specific repair is separate from PC launch crashes, network failures or every save/progression issue. Install the current update and record a remaining exact error before reporting it.

Co-op access and a safe first test
Read platform-specific subscription/access terms in the official listing; the console online-multiplayer condition is not a requirement to purchase a console subscription for every Steam session. Test a normal session with the intended accounts, then capture platform, mode, player count and whether a problem follows suspend/resume. Use the crash guide for a process closing, not the split-screen menu to diagnose it.
